Has anyone ever made use of this kind of thing? What's your experience been? A good jump-start to creativity?
Where do you get your ideas?

I've never tried this, but I glanced through briefly and I admit, this could potentially be handy for a little creative jump start. My skimming eyes landed on "the kids decide to give the dog a little magic weed," and I laughed out loud.
When I was NaNo ML and organized write-ins, I'd have a literal plot bank. We called it "The Block Box" and I'd haul it, a handful of colored pencils, and a stack of colored squares of paper to each and every write-in. We'd all keep feeding the box with plot twists, characters, bits of dialogue, situations that our fellow writers could draw from when they felt stuck. And, you know, it worked. While I'd be typing away, I'd see a frustrated writer quietly get up and open the box. Sometimes it would take a few draws, but eventually a slip would make the writer nod and return to the keyboard.
I still do something similar when stuck. I ask my critique partner for a handful of random words and then try to write towards one of those words.
